Florence Morning News
Gregg Hampton
FLORENCE--Rick Bennett, the heart and soul of the Pee Dee Pride,
got his just reward on Sunday, which -- in turn -- gave the Pride a
victory.
Bennett, who missed the final two games of the Southern
Conference
semifinals in New Orleans due to injury and was listed as doubtful for
the finals, scored 6 minutes, 30 seconds into the third overtime on
Sunday to give the Pride a 4-3 victory in the third-longest game in
East Coast Hockey League history.
"I told Darcy (Dallas) to keep puttin' it on the net, and
I'd be there,"
Bennett said. "It was on the net and it happened to be on my forehand.
I don't know where (Mississippi goaltender Travis Scott) was. I know
it wasn't pretty, but I'll take it."
Bennett redirected a blistering slapshot from Dallas past Scott
to give
the Pride the win, which covered 106 minutes, 30 seconds.
With the win, the Pride evened the best-of-seven series with the
Sea
Wolves at one game apiece. Game 3 will be 8:05 p.m. (EDT) Wednesday
in Biloxi.
Mississippi took Game 1 of the series on Saturday with a 1-0
victory
7:27 into the first overtime.
On Sunday, the Sea Wolves had leads of 1-0 and 3-2, before Dany
Bousquet tied the contest with 31 seconds left in regulation.
Bousquet, who had missed an open net earlier in the period,
buried the
shot past Mississippi goaltender Travis Scott in an open part of the net
to send the game into the first overtime.
The play was the result of heads-up play by Chris Lipsett and
Peter
Geronazzo.
Lipsett, who scored the Pride's first goal of the game, kept the
puck in
the Mississippi zone, then passed it to Geronazzo.
Geronazzo, who came onto the ice as a sixth attacker when the
Pride
pulled goaltender Sandy Allan, dug the puck out of the corner and passed
it to Bousquet, who was sitting alone in front of the net.
Mississippi took a 1-0 lead 8 1/2 minutes into the first period
on Kelly
Hurd's third goal of the playoffs.
Hurd took a pass from Kevin Hilton on the right side of the ice
and ripped
a slapper from the faceoff circle that beat Allan on the stick side.
Lipsett, the Pride's leading goal scorer in the playoffs,
tallied his 11th goal
of the postseason with 4:53 left in the first period to tie the game at 1-1.
Michael Payne, playing his first shift of the game, stole the
puck from
Mississipp's Cody Bowtell and fed Lipsett between the top of the faceoff
circles. Lipsett then fired a slapshot over the right shoulder of Scott to
break Scott's scoreless streak at 207:26.
Kurt Mallett then gave the Pride a 2-1 lead 3:41 into the second
period
with his first goal in more than a month.
Mallett, taking a pass from Bousquet after Bousquet had stolen
the puck from
a Mississippi defender, went one-on-one with Scott and beat him with a
slapshot from the right faceoff circle.
However, Mississippi came back in the third period to dominate
Pee Dee,
scoring twice to take a 3-2 advantage.
Chris Schmidt tied the game 2-2 just 2:40 into the third period,
snaring a
rebound and flipping it over Allan. Allan had made an initial kick save on
Karl Infanger's slapshot, but could not recover in time to stop Schmidt.
The Sea Wolves then made it 3-2 with a power play goal by Mark
Rupnow,
who split two Pride defensemen and poked the puck underneath Allan while
sliding headfirst into the Pride netminder.
Pee Dee argued the goal, saying Rupnow was in the crease when he
shot the
puck, but to no avail.
