Stars shine on offense in ECHL gala
Adam Davis—Greenville News
It was a game that followed the usual All-Star script – lots of skill, plenty of goals, few checks, no penalties.
And though Greenville’s Sean Venedam auditioned well for the role of
leading man, the honor went to Dayton’s
Jeff Mitchell as the Northern
Conference beat the Southern Conference 8-6 in the East Coast Hockey League
All-Star Game on Wednesday night at the Bi-Lo Center.
Venedam thrilled the home crowd with two goals, but Mitchell also scored
twice, including one in the third period,
to lead the North, which never
trailed, past the South. Mitchell was voted the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Bujar Amidovski, picked as the top goaltender, saved 12 of 13 shots in the final period as the North protected a 6-5 lead.
Mitchell’s second goal, 3:33 into the third period, gave the North some
breathing room at 7-5. Jamie Ling slid a nice pass
across the goal mouth to set
up Mitchell’s score.
Chris Valicevic pulled the South to one behind with a slap shot from the left
point at 6:49, but Joel Irving responded with a
goal for the North.
Ryan Kraft, while taking one of the game’s few checks, flipped the puck
into the slot from the right corner. Irving then
one-timed it into the goal at
9:43 for an 8-6 lead. It would be the game’s final score.
In the second period, the South’s line of Venedam, Wes Mason, and Dany Bousquet brought the team back into the game.
First, the North outscored the South 3-0 in the first ten minutes for a 6-3
lead. Jason Lawmaster punched a rebound between
David Brumby’s legs 1:17 into
the period to give the North a 4-3 advantage.
Blaine Fitzpatrick extended the lead with an open shot from the slot at 6:57,
and defenseman Derrick Walser made it 6-3 at 9:59
when he carried the puck
untouched down the slot and beat Brumby from close range.
But Mason rallied the South, setting up goals for each of his linemates.
First, he fed Bousquet in front of the goal on the left
for an easy score at
12:35.
Then he charged through the heart of the North’s defense, dodging several
players along the way. Just before he reached the
goal, he left the puck for a
trailing Venedam, who beat Sean Matile with a wrist shot to the top of the net.
In the first period, the Northern Conference controlled the play early and
scored the first two goals. Curtis Wilgosh opened the
scoring 3:24 into the
game, punching in a rebound of Peter Vandermeer’s shot. At 6:10, Mark Murphy
made a nice pass over a
defenseman’s stick, and Mitchell whacked it out of the
air and into the net.
The South tied it on goals by Olivier Morin and Venedam. Morin rebounded a soft Valicevic shot and scored at 12:01.
Venedam tied it on a 2-on-1 rush with Mason. Venedam fed the puck ahead to
Mason, who had a breakaway with a defenseman
chasing him. Mason’s shot was
saved, but an unchecked Venedam flipped in the rebound at 14:56.
The North regained the lead at 17:48 when Kraft took Duane Harmer’s pass in
the slot and shot a backhander past goalie Jeff
Maund.
It took the South all of 16 seconds to respond, as Ryan Gaucher’s rebound goal at 18:04 sent the teams to the locker room tied.
